A River Called Titas 鈥� Ritwik Ghatak, Bangladesh (1973) 156 minutes
Following multiple generations, families, and individuals in the villages along the Titas river, director Ghatak captures the lifestyles, social mores, and beliefs of a then-vanishing culture. One of the films recently restored in Martin Scorsese鈥檚 World Cinema Project, we clearly see the influence of European directors like de Sica on the lovingly framed, vivid black & white images that comprise this complex film about the relationships between the river and its human neighbors, as well as between the people themselves. With explorations into childhood, the status of single women and widows, the outcast, and the elderly, we are immersed in a full spectrum of a traditional society. In Bengali with English subtitles.
