This St. Patrick’s Day offering depicts a re-envisioning of the Irish immigration story in the modern-day U.S. In America follows a young family as they resettle in a multi-ethnic neighborhood in 1980s New York City and try to chase their dreams while simultaneously trying to escape the personal grief they hope to leave behind. While not completely autobiographical, this film is one of the most personal for director Sheridan (In The Name of the Father, My Left Foot), whose daughters helped him write the script. Exploring themes of family, risk, faith, and creativity, the film’s heartening journey through and beyond suffering is anchored by energetic, ingأ©nue performances from its the child actors and the African artist they befriend as their family crisis unfolds.
