The 37th Annual Film Series continues Sun., Sept. 16th. 2:00 PM with The Insult –  Ziad Doueiri, Lebanon (2017), 112 min. In Arabic with English subtitles.
A contender for the 2018 Academy Award, director Doueri (West Beirut, The Attack) brings us his latest exploration of the nuances of social tensions in the modern-day Middle East in ways that are seldom understood in Western media. The story follows the fall-out of an insult blown out of proportion. Everyday urban maintenance along the streets of Beirut brings into conflict two men, Toni, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee who has been living in Lebanon for years. As tensions deepen, the men find themselves in court, slowly becoming players in a debate that carries political symbolism of which they were only vaguely aware. The personal realizations they come to as the case winds down create a breathtaking conclusion to the film.
“The Insult ... delivers an honest assessment of the conflict between decency and cruelty that rages in every nation, neighborhood and heart.†– A.O. Scott, The New York Times
