Hispanic Heritage Month

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, honors the rich history and culture of Hispanic populations in the United States. It highlights their invaluable contributions to American society, including but not limited to their advocacy work, art, food, and language.

Today, Hispanic communities represent 18.9% of the US population. Hispanic presence in the US has played a significant role in shaping the nation into what it is today and continues to influence every aspect of society.

The theme of Hispanic Heritage Month 2024 is: â€œPioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.â€‌

What is the history and significance of Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month was first celebrated as a week-long event, under President Johnson in 1968. Twenty years later, in 1988, this event was extended to a month under President Reagan. The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month is significant, as the Independence Days of several Central American countries coincide. Some of the independence days celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month include:

Sept. 15: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua

Sept. 16: Mexico

Sept. 18: Chile

Sept. 21: Belize
